A landmark review of the role of artificial \nintelligence (AI) in the future of global health published in The Lancet\n calls on the global health community to establish guidelines for \ndevelopment and deployment of new technologies and to develop a \nhuman-centered research agenda to facilitate equitable and ethical use \nof AI. The review and recommendations were developed by Nina Schwalbe, \nMPH, adjunct professor in the Heilbrunn Department of Population and \nFamily Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public \nHealth, and Principal Visiting Fellow at United Nations University — \nInternational Institute for Global Health, and Brian Wahl, PhD, \nassistant acientist in the Department of International Health at the \nJohns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advances in information technology infrastructure and mobile \ncomputing power in many low and middle-income countries (LMICs) have \nraised hopes that AI could help to address challenges which are unique \nto the field of global health and accelerate the achievement of the \nhealth-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Universal Health\n Coverage (UHC). However, the deployment of AI-enabled interventions \nmust be exercised with care and caution for individuals and societies to\n benefit equally, especially in the current context of the digital tools\n and systems being rapidly deployed in response to the novel coronavirus\n disease 2019 (COVID-19).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Especially during the COVID-19 emergency, we cannot ignore what we \nknow about the importance of human-centered design and gender bias of \nalgorithms,” said Schwalbe. “Thinking through how AI interventions will \nbe adapted within the context of the health systems in which they are \ndeployed must be part of every study.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This review marks an important point in our rapidly developing \ndigital age at which to reflect on the impressive opportunities that AI \nmay hold, but also consider what we are urgently missing to protect \nthose most at risk — exciting developments but many are being rolled \nout without adequate evidence or appropriate safeguards” said Dr. Naomi \nLee, Senior Executive Editor at The Lancet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Wahl and Schwalbe, artificial intelligence is already \nbeing used in high-resource settings to address COVID-19 response \nactivities, including patient risk assessment and managing patient \nflowThey point out, however, that while artificial intelligence could \nsupport the COVID-19 response in resource-limited settings, there are \ncurrently few mechanisms to ensure its appropriate use in such settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the field of AI is rapidly evolving in global health, and in light\n of the COVID-19 response, the review highlights the following \nrecommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
